Job Description

Pure Pork Farms is currently recruiting for an innovative permanent full-time Barn Manager who will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of our swine facilities located in Mount Albion, PEI Canada.

Summary

The Barn Manager is responsible for supervision, coordination and effective scheduling of workers to meet production targets and quality standards. Responsibilities will include but not limited to the training of staff in production methods, safety, policies and procedures, as well as the identification and correction of potential work problems and health and safety issues. This position requires a strong, practical knowledge of agricultural skills, barn management and a passionate commitment to provide healthy antibiotic free pork. In the course of their duties, the Barn Manager has primary responsibilities for the monitoring of livestock, purchasing supplies, preparing a range of reports, and holds responsibilities for the effective budgeting for their area.  Through the effective management of targets, goals and production efficiencies, the Barn Manager will ensure the ongoing success of the barn.

Job Duties

  • Supervise, coordinate and schedule the activities of workers.
  • Preparing plans and schedules for birthing, nursing, slaughtering, packaging and ensuring staff understands expectations.
  • Monitor pig health and welfare, including liaising with vets
  • Protect the barn environment and maintain biosecurity
  • Resolve work problems and recommend measures to improve productivity and product quality.
  • Identify, investigate, correct and document potential environmental and safety problems.
  • Scheduling repairs, maintenance and replacement of equipment and machinery.
  • Ensure all staff adheres to health and safety regulations.
  • Assisting with the recruitment and training of new staff according to company policy
  • Collaborating with senior management to prepare budgets and financial reports.
  • Building professional networks and keeping current of developments in agricultural science.
  • Helps to maintain compliance with all regulating agencies and work closely with community partners and transportation companies.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Post-secondary degree in agriculture or animal science / diploma in a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a swine barn management
  • Minimum of 3 years’ supervisory experience with demonstrated motivating, training, appraising and general supervisory skills.
  • Computer skills including knowledge of all google docs, drive, gmail, sheets, what’s ap
  • Ability to make decisions in stressful environments
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery
  • Must have good hand-eye coordination.
  • Must be able to make decisions and work independently; be detail-oriented with excellent communications skills, both verbal and written.
  • Maintenance experience with a mechanical aptitude is preferred.
  • Pure Pork Farms is located in a rural environment and a valid Prince Edward Island Driver’s license and access to a reliable motor vehicle is required
  • Class 3 license is essential; Class 1 license is preferred

Physical Demands and Requirements

  • May require work in hazardous environments requiring protective equipment.
  • May be exposed to dust and high noise levels.
  • May be required to work in confined spaces, on ladders and in unfavourable weather conditions.
  • Ability to attend and conduct presentations.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Ability to stand for extended hours and perform manual labour
  • Must adhere to bio security and other health protocols
  • Ability to frequently lift, push, pull up to 50 pounds
  • Personal protective equipment, including hardhats, gloves, safety glasses, safety shoes, and respiratory protection and ear protection are required.
  • Vision that permits close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. When grading grain, the ability to identify and distinguish colours is also important.
  • Ability to smell odours and understand and discern safety warning systems
  • This is a physical job that includes both indoor and outdoor work in all types of weather and temperature environments. 
  • Flexible with work hours to reflect peak production needs;  must be prepared to receive phone calls and respond to company-related needs
